The Benefits of Power Walks

When I was commuting to work, back on my ranch days (some of you will get that), I would always see people on power walks. I always wondered did they work. It seemed like you would have to gain some serious distance to have an effective workout. Let's see what it is all about.

All the fitness freaks are well aware about the numerous benefits of power walks. Also known as speed walking, power walking is an intermediate between walking and jogging. Power walks occur at a fast speed, a speed at which people usually start jogging. It is a great way to keep yourself fit and enhance your overall health. Power walking is a great aerobic activity which not only burns calories, but also strengthens and firms muscles, especially of the upper region of the body. While you are undertaking healthy power walks, follow safety and healthy tips. Keep a check on your posture.

The Form of Power Walks

In all effective workouts, proper form is key. Power walks are pretty straightforward and most people would not think that there is a certain form to uphold. Actually there is. All workouts are more effective when completed correctly, whether they are simple or easy to execute. The perfect position is chin up, chest raised and shoulders relaxed. In the beginning, don't over-strain yourself as you are susceptible of putting yourself at risk of injury. Start at a walking pace. Slowly increase your walking pace and use your arms to pump yourself forward. You should take smaller steps in the beginning and slowly increase your stride. Don't try everything at first; it will only harm your muscles. Make sure that you bend your elbows to 90 degrees. Also, as you walk, breathe normally and also try taking long, deep breaths to enhance oxygen and blood supply throughout the body. All these small things can greatly help you to begin this workout properly.

Attire for Power Walks

Proper selection of clothing and shoes is important. Choose clothing that will be comfortable and shoes of good quality and a correct size. In order to determine a good quality, well-fitting shoe, then you need to do a four point test: flex, wiggle, rock and roll. The shoe should be flexible, it should bend in the front. You should be able to wiggle your toes and move them side to side. For the rock test, lean back on your heels, you should have control, support and cushioning. To complete the roll test, take one slow step forward from heel to toe. You should not feel any resistance or pinching as your foot progresses through the step. If the shoe passes these tests, then you are ready for your workout. Correct pairs of shoes help in taking your body's weight and are thus essential while undertaking this healthy activity.

Happy Power Walks to All! I'm headed for the top, I hope you're coming.
